As super internet marketer Stephen Pierce says, “If you want to go broke, market to all the folk. If you want to get rich, market to a niche.” A niche is a group of people that are bonded together by a common thread. It could be a profession, a hobby or a life stage. No matter what it is, they identify with one another. Use these tips to unlock the secrets of niche marketing.
Pick a Niche
First you have to pick a niche. You can start off by listing things that you have experience with or are interested in. For instance your profession may be accounting, but you also play in a soccer league. Or you’re a stay at home mom who loves ride motorcycles. There are literally thousands of niches. You just need to start with one.
Do niche research. Just because you’re interested in it doesn’t mean there’s a huge demand for it. Use Google Adwords for your niche research. If you’re interested in fly fishing, but only 3,200 people search for it on the monthly basis, then you know it may not be the most lucrative niche.
Trigger Words
Stephen Pierce explains that there are certain trigger words you can type in when you’re doing a keyword research. Do this if you run out of specific keywords and you need fresh niche ideas. Use the Adwords tool or http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com. Here are some trigger words:
learn
training
how to
tutorial
get rid of
avoid
Type some of these phrases in. I guarantee that you will be surprised at some of the results that pop up. You will get ideas for niches that you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. Explore. And remember, the most lucrative niche opportunities may be in areas you have no experience, knowledge or attachments to. Don’t be afraid to try the unfamiliar.
Micro-Niches
Once, you’ve found a niche, you need to focus on solving one specific problem within that niche. This is what you call a micro-niche. Believe it or not, some niches are too broad to market to as a whole such as dance or swimming.
Instead of marketing to dancers, you may decide to market a product or service to help ballet dancers with their pointe skills. Rather than focusing on all the swimmers, you focus on helping swimmers improve their butterfly stroke. Do you see the difference? It’s laser focus and it pays better every time.
Once you’ve picked a niche and successfully solved a problem within it, just simply repeat the process over and over again. There’s no rule that says you need to stay in one area. Just remember to never go too broad within a niche.
