How to receive SMS message for a web service?

Is there a service out there that allows you to receive SMS messages from people’s cell phones? Are there any free services like this?

I want to be able to write an service and receives a SMS message from people and then processes the information sent. Is there something out there that will help me do this. I know lot’s about .NET development and web services, etc, but not too much about SMS.

What do people look for when they want web services?

I am looking to advertise or market my skills and my business. Those in the field would say that my offerings or skills are more correctly described as web development than web design. However, I am marketing to small businesses, organizations, and individuals. Many of them are not high tech (or necessarily tech savvy, though they know a decent amount of what is available out there). So, I don’t know whether to use the words Web Design, Web Development or just say Websites Services. A competitor put an ad on the back page of the same paper and used the headline AFFORDABLE WEBSITES”. This isn’t for the search engines so the question isn’t really what do they search for but what would they recognize as representing a company or freelancer that can help them. I was thinking of adding on the second line: “Web Design, Programming, Web apps” and my domain name. I think those terms are recognized but I could use some help or feedback.

Based on one of the feedback items, maybe I should highlight the types of services that people cannot do themselves. Apparently people pay thousands of dollars for Drupal sites, for example. I don’t want to limit myself and my opportunities.
